How to Get the Most (as a Mom) from Corporate Worship

On any given Sunday morning you will find our entire house a buzz with activity as the family get around for church.  There are farm chores that have to be done (even on Sunday chickens still need to be fed, the calf still needs his bottle and the beta fish is jumping around in her tank saying, “don’t forget me!).  There is a husband that needs breakfast and five kids that seem to think they need to eat too before we leave for church.

The dynamic in our home is a bit different because we have seven people getting ready to leave at the exact same time with only one bathroom!  I have a special needs child that I am trying to encourage to get ready for church independent of Mom or Dad – and usually takes 3-4 attempts to get it all right.  (“No, Zak that does not match – go put on what I laid out for you last night, and comb your hair, and make your bed and don’t forget to zip up your pants…. Did you brush your teeth?)

Zak all ready for church - before Mom saw him.

All of this can leave this Momma just a little exhausted by the time we all get into the van and heading down the road for church.   Throw in a few squabbles to have to referee and you pretty much have what my Sunday morning looks like.  It is easy to get side tracked and even wonder if it’s worth all the work to get the family to church every single Sunday morning.

Call me old fashioned, but I honestly feel that the most important day of the week is Sunday.  This is the day out of the week that we have set aside as a family to stop our normal routine and spend time reflecting on God and His Word.  It is easy in the middle of getting everyone around and out the door to forget how important the day really is.  It is easy to get frustrated and to not be under the control of the Holy Spirit as I interact with my family as we get ready for church.  When that happens it is very difficult for me to get everything I can out of the church service.  (It’s kind of hard to sing “I Love to Tell the Story”, and not feel like a hypocrite when my words were filled with anger as I told the kids to stop fighting and just get out in the van an hour before).

Have you been there?  Have you sat through a church service dazed ?  I want to get everything I can out of corporate worship.  I want to come to church ready to hear what God has for me and leave filled with the knowledge of God’s will for my life and my upcoming week.  How can I do this when my life is so busy?

Here are some things that have helped me get the most out of Sundays.

1.  Start the Night Before

Nothing can slow down forward motion like having to stop everything to find a child’s missing church shoe.  Notice I said, shoe – singular.  Church shoes never seem to go missing in pairs.  (Unless you have a boy that decided he did not like his church shoes and threw them in the trash – only to inform you of this fact on the Sunday morning of the church Christmas program. In which case, I am here to tell you that a Pastor’s son can stand in front of the church, in December, in Wisconsin, with only socks on his feet and say his lines in the Christmas program.  Yes, I was embarrassed to the point of tears; but lived to tell about it – and eventually laughed about it.)  But I digress…  Having clothes laid out the night before, from hair bows to church shoes, has helped our Sunday morning go a little smoother.

Another way we try to prepare for Sunday the night before is by making Saturday nights free from activities and having the day end sooner than a normal night out of the week.  Sure, there are times when there is a youth activity or a church activity planned at our church.  We would not keep them from a planned church activity;  but as much as we are able, we have the whole family home on Saturday evening and spend the night in quiet activities like reading or playing quiet games.  We all try to get to bed earlier also.  I have one son (the same one who discarded church shoes) who has great difficulty staying awake in church if he got to bed late the night before.  As much as we can, we try to make Saturday nights as uneventful as possible and a night to wrap up early and get a good night's rest.

2.  Go to Church Ready to Participate

God never intended for us to be spectators when we go to church.  He wants us to be participants.  Participation in church helps you get a lot out of the church service.

One way we can participate in church is interacting and engaging in fellowship with others before and after the church service.  God can use a simple conversation with someone at church to encourage your heart; and God can use you talking to someone to encourage their heart.  We have a lady at church that is always smiling.  Always.  I watch as she participates in greeting others.  She always has a kind word for those whom she passes.  Kids go up to her just to have her say hello to them and give them a hug.  I am positive she leaves church filled with joy because of all of the people who came and talked to her;  and those whom she greeted were encouraged also.  She has a way of making every person she is around feel special.

Another way to participate in church is to be engaged in the song service.  Sings the hymns and pay attention to the words you are singing.  God has designed music to prepare our hearts for the message from His Word. There have been times when I have had to catch my breath as I sang these meaningful hymns as the truths of the words ministered truth to my heart.      Many times there has been a paradigm shift in my thinking as my mind shifts from having an earthly focus to a spiritual focus - and the preaching has not even started!

3.  Come Ready to Listen and Learn

When our pastor begins to preach and open God’s Word – I must engage my brain.   For me, taking notes helps me stay focused on the preaching.  I will jot down a thought I have about something our Pastor has said; or I write down the outline from the message as he preaches it.  My husband says that when he takes notes he gets distracted and looses focus on what the Pastor is preaching.  Both of us listen intently in two different ways.  Whatever you need to do to stay focused on the message, I would challenge you to do it!  God uses His Word to speak to our heart, to convict of sin and to draw us to Himself.  Being an active listener allows us to get a lot out of the corporate worship.

4.  Talk During Church

I'm sure your reading this and saying, "What! Talk during church??!!"  Talking in church is like an unwritten rule – never to be broken in any church denomination.  It might surprise you to know that I believe you should carry on a conversation the entire time the Word of God is being preached.  (I know your shocked, right?)   You should be in a constant state of conversation with God.    Ask God if what you're hearing is for you.  The Holy Spirit uses the Word of God to speak to our hearts.  Interact with Him as He is working in your heart.  When He points out an area of your life that is not right with Him – agree with Him -  confess your sin right there in your heart during the message!  As a teenager, I remember the challenge my Youth Pastor gave to us repeatedly:  "Respond to God as soon as He speaks".  God can listen to my heart cry, my confession, and my burdens as I commune with Him  - even during the message!

5.  Be ready to Respond

While we can (and I believe should) respond to God during the message – there are times when God prompts our hearts to actively respond at the end of a message. Whether that action be kneeling down in prayer, seeking counsel from someone or making a public declaration of God's leading in your life. There are times I have responded to God during the message, and at the end of the message knew that all was settled between me and God; but there have been other times that I knew I needed to actively respond in some way at the close of the message.    Be ready and willing to respond to God however He speaks to you.  Perhaps God has revealed someone to whom you need to apologize and make things right.  RESPOND!

Recently, God brought deep conviction to my heart of an area He had spoken to me about for years, that I, in unbelief,  had discredited as “not that big of a deal”.  Great was the conviction as I was listening to the preaching!  I knew if I left that church service without accountability I would fall back into unbelief and be defeated.  God prompted my heart to talk with Rob and leaned over and asked him if he would pray with me.  I told him how God had dealt with me.  There was a freedom in my heart as I responded to the conviction of the Holy Spirit and made things right.

However, by Tuesday I was starting to doubt that perhaps I had made a big deal out of nothing and was being too oversensitive to the Spirit’s leading.  (I was falling back into unbelief).  In my doubt on Tuesday I asked Rob if he thought I had been foolish on Sunday by thinking God had dealt with me about such a "little" thing. My husband looked me straight in the eye and said, “God spoke to your heart on Sunday, Martie – just obey Him!”  I'm so thankful I obeyed God and asked my husband to pray with me about this matter.  Such freedom I have found in the past weeks in walking obedience to Christ and not falling back into unbelief.

Corporate Worship can be difficult when you have little ones in your home. I cannot imagine going to all of the work it takes to go to church as a family, to simply to be a spectator in a meaningless religious exercise!  No, when I go to church on Sunday I want to get all I can from the gift God has given me in corporate worship. I want to experience all that God has for me on every single Sunday morning.  These things have helped me through the years. What a blessing it has been in watching our children learn about God and worshiping together as a family. Corporate worship has been a blessing from God to me - it is an invaluable part of my life.  I trust it is in yours also.

Thanks for stopping by.  I’m so glad you did!

Blessings,

Our Schedule

Last weekend for my birthday my girls surprised me by taking me to a Maxwell Energize Seminar.

After the Conference the girls took me to the Melting Pot for Dessert!

I first read Teri Maxwell’s “Manager’s of Their Homes” back in 2001.  It was a life saver to me as a young homeschool Mom.  In fact, if I was only able to to recommend one resource for the homeschool mom -  that would be the book!    The other book by Teri entitled:  “Homeschooling with a Meek and Quiet Spirit” would come in close second!   I try to read through this particular book  every August before the new school year starts just to refresh my mind on the attitudes of the heart that I need to address in my own life.  It is an EXCELLENT book!    I think you would find these resources invaluable if you homeschool; but I think the tips you would find would be beneficial even if you do not homeschool your children.  Well, when I heard that they were going to be in North Carolina doing their homeschool  workshops I mentioned off hand, that I would love to see them again.  The girls jumped on it and planned a weekend out just for me.  It was wonderful.

With the workshops fresh in my mind, I thought I would do a post on our homeschool schedule this year.  We have had it in place for a over a month and it has gone very smooth.  In fact, this year seems to be the smoothest start to a homeschool year that we have ever had!  Now, before I post our schedule - I have to admit here that there is something wrong with me.  I have known it for years; and my older kids inform me that it is totally obvious to them.  I LOVE organization.   I LOVE schedules.  I have been deemed a control freak (and that was not even by a family member).  I am the one who makes grocery lists by the aisle that I will find the items in the store.  I have "To Do"  lists that have -'make tomorrow's To Do List'- on the list of things to do. I have successfully had my spices in alphabetical order in my cabinets - before the kids became teenagers and started cooking.  All that mentioned to say this, if you are a normal person - this post will not interest you at all!  Feel free to skip it and wait for another one.  I do not know how things are in your world; but in mine it is messed up - but alphabetized and categorized.  :)    I also am simply putting out our schedule  to help some who might be looking for ideas on things that others have done that  worked for them.   Feel free to get ideas from me; but I must assure you that this is NOT a post to tell you how to live your life, plan your day or how to homeschool!  I am not trying to mommy -shame you, or to make you have a guilt trip if you do not live by a schedule.  Life is too short for that!

So, enjoy - if you like schedule/ organization or if you need to find inspiration.  To all the rest, I hope we can still be friends when you find out just how deep my organization sickness goes.  LOL

Our Schedule:  2014-2015 – ( Our Family and Grades:   Rachel, Graduated and not doing homeschool work.    (I did not include her schedule in here because she is an adult and her hour by hour choices are no longer my concern. :)  Abbey - 12th grade, James -  10th grade, Zak (2cd / 3rd grade, has autism and thrives with a schedule!)  Anna:  1st Grade) Me - Mom and Rob - Dad.)

10:00- Lights Out

That is how our day is supposed to go on a normal day.

*The older kids do not work everyday with their Dad; but go in three to four times a week.   When they are home they continue on with their school while the Littles do school and then exercise and have free time until dinner.  The evenings are devoted to homework and quiet play (as much as is possible).

The Littles have chores in the morning.  Here is a list of their chores:

Sunshine Chores:
Make Bed

Put PJ’s Away
Comb Hair

Morning Chores for Zak:
MWF – Empty Trashes in each room take them to the dump (across the street)  OR
T/ TH – Sweep Porches / Straighten Porches
Feed and Water Chickens
Brush Teeth
Go to Devotions (In his bedroom with strict orders that he is NOT to bother his brother doing school!)  :)

Morning Chores for Anna:
Give Thor Food and Water for the day
Put Clean Washcloths in the Bathroom
Brush Teeth
Go to Devotions (On the couch in the front room)

The Older Kids have their Morning Routine:

Breakfast
Room of the Day (more on this in another post)
(James also uses his morning routine to go to a nearby farm and do chores there – feeding chickens)

We devote Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday to this schedule.  On Thursday we do the same schedule until we start school; however, we only do the papers that need to be done for seat work that day.  We forgo actual teaching and flashcards and one on one teaching in each subject.  Instead, we spend use this day to go to the library and run any errands we need to in town.  We spend time in the afternoon for concentrated time on Science and History.  The Littles have their piano lessons on Thursdays; and we spend time cooking together and doing occupational type classes that day on life skills that they need to master. (If I notice that they are not doing their jobs correctly during the week I would spend time on Thursday to teach and train them on what they need to do better on their jobs).  It’s a more laid back day; but we get a lot done.   I enjoy Thursdays very very much!

One of the reasons I think that this year has gone by so smoothly I because we have an outside activity in the older kids getting to work that cannot change.  So many times as I have homeschooled through the years, I have found  it is easy to push things aside and try to work them in somewhere else if we get up later in the morning.  The older kids going to work during the day on some days requires them to have at least one class done and finished before they head out the door to work (because there is not enough hours in the evening to get them all done and be in bed at a decent hour.)  This has driven the schedule forward and been most beneficial!

I would have never dreamed that the older kid would work so hard at getting their school work done (even at 7 in the morning!); but Dad sat down with them and said that the job would be the first thing to go if they did not keep their grades up and school work completed.  They love having the extra money a job give them – and they have done better than ever keeping school work done and grades where they need to be!  It has been a great motivation for them!  I love that they are able to spend the day working with their Dad; and he is being afforded the time to pour into their lives as they work together and in the car as they drive to and from work (an hour each day).

So that is our school year schedule for this school year.   I plan on doing a few more posts on things we are doing in our days to keep thing running smoothly.  (Laundry schedules, breakfast schedule, etc).  I trust your school year is going smoothly – whether you are homeschooling, or send your children to school every morning.  I am a firm believer that children and families thrive on a routine and scheduling.

Thanks for stopping by; I am so glad you did!

School Days

Our school year has begun and quite honestly, it is going quite smoothly.  We had to spend quite a lot of time planning out the school year schedule – as the older kids have quite a bit of things they are involved in and we wanted to accommodate so they can do those things and school work.  We will see how it goes.  They have been given a list of "first things to be taken out" if their grades do not stay up and school work is not kept caught up.  We also have had a summer where there has been a lot of surprises!  So, it feels good to be back on a school schedule again.  Rob does have a cancer treatment and some tests coming up which my causes some changes in our day to day for a little bit; but at least this way we have something to aim for.  :)

Here is our 2014-2015 school schedules:

5:30:  Rachel and I get up and get around for the day

6:00:  Rachel and I - Devotions / James - chicken chores at a nearby farm / Abbey and James then use this hour to get around for the day, eat breakfast and be ready to start their first class at 7)

6:45:  Littles get up and do their Sunshine Chores (make bed, get dressed, put PJ's away, comb hair)  I eat my breakfast at this time

7:00 I do my house cleaning / Rachel supervise the Littles while they get their own breakfast (a change to the schedule that Zak has dubbed:  “The most exciting part of the new schedule – getting to pick my own breakfast!”) Abbey and James start their first class of the day.

7:20:  Littles do their Morning chores (trashes over to the dump, porches swept off, dog fed, towels changed in the bathroom)

7:30:  Littles do their devotions (Zak now can do his devotions independently working out of his Patch book, Anna listens to the Bible on CD with headphones ).

8:00:  School starts with the Littles  (I work an hour with each one – while I am working with one the other one is in at the dining room table doing seat-work and copy work).  James and Abbey and Rachel leave for work on Mon and Thurs.  On the other days they keep working through their school work.  Each class of their classes is one hour in duration.

12:00:  Lunch break

Until the weather gets too cold we enjoy our lunch on the front porch.

1:00:  History and Science with the Littles

2:00:  Littles have play time / I do my exercise time  / On the days they are home the older kids do their exercise time now – unless James has been hired by someone, somewhere to work for them then he does those jobs now.  It is amazing to me how many people call for James to come work for them.  I kid you not, this kid could have full time work from all of these calls if he did not have to do school work.  (A fact he has brought to both mine and his Dad’s attention from time to time!)

Zak was wondering why JFK only was president for 2 years.  We took time out of Math to go look up JFK.  I LOVE that about homeschool!  Zak was very disappointed to learn the reason.

3:15:  Writing / Blog time

3:45:  Anna does Piano Practice

4:00 Zak Piano Practice / Anna – Violin Practice / James and Abbey : Classes (M, Th) Instrument Practice (T,W, F)

4:30:  Littles Help with Dinner Prep

5:15:  Family Dinner Time / Devotions

6:00:  Littles Play Time / James and Abbey - Continue school (M,Th) or Afternoon Chores / Email Check    ( T,F)

7:00 James and Abbey continue school or homework / Littles Play / I work on school work or writing / Rob is working on his Master Classes

8:00 Shower time / Bedtime Prep / Story time with the Littles (We are currently in the middle of Narnia and the witch has just taken care of Asland and evil appears to have prevailed – I am always begged and pleaded with to read “just one more chapter!”  Sometimes I have a little girl who knows how to blink her big brown eyes *just* right while she begs hoping it will persuade me to read on a little further.  Sometimes it works.

8:30 Littles- Lights Out / I continue with my school work or writing and the house is really quiet – sometimes I just want to go to bed with the Littles.
