Primitive Food Storage

Tammy hosts Kitchen Tip Tuesday's. I enjoy the many tips I get each week and enjoy participating when I think of a tip.

This Tuesday I thought I would share with you my storage for extra food. I have become increasingly concerned with the reports about the dangers of using plastics for food storage. I was trying to think of an alternative - when the idea hit me. Why not use my canning jars. I cannot tell you how much I enjoy this. This week when I made a double batch of Tammy's Granola cereal - which in my opinion is the best out there!!! - I decided to store it in the canning jars. I love how it looks on my shelved in the pantry - and it is much easier to pull out a jar and a pitcher of milk in the morning.

I do think that using the canning jars for other food storage - like left over soup would be a hit too. (of course that I would store in the refrigerator). I do understand that we can not shelter our families from all the toxins in this world - but I like that I am able to do a little bit - in making food storage a bit more "health friendly."
I am hosting a giveaway and would be honored if you would put your name in the hat for the drawing. (I am giving away a jar of my granola in the giveaway - if that would be an incentive for you! :) Stop over and leave a comment I will make sure I put your name in the drawing then.

Thanks so much for stopping by - I am glad you did.

Blessings,
~Martie

I love to store things in glass jars. It actually looks nice as well as being practical. But can I tell you how very disappointed I was when Hellmann's started putting their mayo in plastic jars? I even wrote to them, to no avail. But I keep the lids--they actually fit canning jars!

Hey Martie,
There are easy screw on lids for jars available thru Leamans Non electric supply. The lids are plastic, but to use on glass canning jars. I love mine. Even use a jar and one of the lids as a *water bottle*. Any way the granola looks yummy and good for us,please include me in you fun giveaway!!!! Thanks tammyp

I started doing this over xmas break after seeing all the stores with all the "cookies in a jar mixes". I hit the jack pot at the swapmeet the other day when I found the petite diced tomatoes on super sale and bought up 2 cases worth. Now to use them and store stuff in them.

Til then I have been using some peach glass jars I got from my aunts house plus some spaghetti jars.

The granola looks so pretty (and delicious) in the jars. Great idea. I need to try that granola recipe. Thanks for the comment on my blog!

I too have been having the same concerns about using plastic. Especially when reheating things in the microwave in plastic containers.
The canning jars just need a ribbon and would make a nice gift for friends and family! Great tip, thanks for sharing.

Martie,

I love your idea! I'm totally into things looking pretty when I'm storing them. So I really like your idea alot. Maybe I'll keep my eyes open this spring for some good deals on glass containers. I store my rice, barley, etc.. in my canning jars.

I've been switching over to glass containers also. I put my baking soda in a canning jar and stuck a label on it.

I didn't even know about Tuesday's Kitchen Tips! I posted some today on my blog. ;-)

All the canning jars popular here in the US (the main ones--Kerr,, ball, etc) have BPA in the lining under the lids. There is a brand from Germany called Weck that doesn't. Maybe other brands too, you can try googling. Also google about bpa in cans, and don't buy canned tomatoes, very acidic do leaches more. (Pomi brand in cartons is safe.). Eden brand canned goods are all completely bpa-free. Native Forest is too. (Not too many are.). Again google for more info... :)
